Everyone cares about PageRank. It is like an evaluation of your work ... that is if you play fair. The last update was a long time ago, and there is o sign of PR wanting to update any time soon. On October 1, Matt Cutts said :
I don’t expect a full PageRank update for at least a few more weeks, and possibly longer.
So how long will it be ? There are definitely changes being made to goggles algorithms, and I think this is delaying the update. Some rumors say google will remove the PR toolbar, but continue to use PR in serps rankings, just without showing it. This is just because people give pagerank too much importance, and since it is so easy to manipulate it, they use methods that are against googles policies in order to get a higher grade. We see this happening all the time, with domain redirects, links buying, links exchange. People just don't know when to stop. Many say that PR doesn't affect serps in any way, but that's BS. Search engine result pages are affected, in a small way by PR, by real, naturaly obtained PageRank.
Google will not drop the pagerank toolbar. Instead, they will continue penalising links sellers, and optimize their algo's to provide better results, and minimize the effect of unnatural PR on serps.
